Air Force is Now Accepting Deliveries of KC-46 Aircraft

The KC-46 Pegasus deliveries to the Air Force had temporarily been suspended after “trash and industrial tools” were found inside the crafts, beginning February 20th. The planes originated from the Everett assembly plant, which has been inspected by the assistant secretary for acquisition, technology and logistics, Dr. Will Roper.

According to the US Air Force, a KC-46 Pegasus (767’s which have been reconfigured into tankers) arrived at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma around midnight on March 11.

Per the press release, “A KC-46 Pegasus was delivered to Altus AFB, Oklahoma today [March 11] following completion of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) sweeps on Boeing KC-46 aircraft going through the acceptance process,” said Rose Riley, the Air Mobility Command Public Affairs spokesperson. “The Air Force Service Acquisition Executive and AMC Commander received an out brief of the Defense Contract Management Agency-approved Corrective Action Plan, March 11. As directed by the CAP, subsequent deliveries will occur as Boeing successfully completes each aircraft’s inspections and actions assigned from today’s review.”

Dr. Roper said they planned to “discuss what they found before we decide if we can accept these again. If we’re not confident with these two airplanes, and the thoroughness with which they’ve been inspected, then we’ll keep them on the ground, but the early feedback I’ve gotten is that there’s been a very thorough scrub, [...] so I expect we will not have any hindrance,” at the AFA Air Warfare Symposium.

Lastly, in order to continue timely deliveries of the crafts, the Defense Contract Management Agency and the Air Force put together thirteen “remedies” to keep Foreign Object Debris from ever making its way into the crafts again. Reportedly, the final kinks are being ironed out.
