Boeing Urges Individual Strike Fund for 2024 Negotiations

Boeing’s touch-labor union, the International Association of Machinists District 751 (IAM 751), introduced a campaign for individual strike funds last week, in preparation for the 2024 contract negotiations.

Boeing employees are encouraged to begin payroll deductions of $50 per paycheck, in order to accrue $6k between now and when talks begin. The motivation behind the movement is to have a workforce that is financially solvent to the point of being able to withstand the cost stress of facing long weeks of negotiation.

The union put up a stub page on their website and Facebook, rallying workers to create their own Individual Strike Fund, found here.

From the website: “Personal savings are always necessary should we face a decision on whether to strike or not. Remember, the goal is always to achieve a contract offer that we can accept. In order for our members to be in the best bargaining position, personal savings are key to confidence and security when it matters most.”

“Our strength at the bargaining table when we face The Boeing Company in 2024 is a direct reflection of solidarity and preparation of our membership. The time to plan for a strong future is NOW! Start your Individual Strike Fund (ISF) savings account today with a new payroll deduction to savings to give us strength in 2024!”

Crucially, the 737 MAX crisis is now at play. Whereas prior negotiations had pitted union givebacks against opposed long term contract targets, strategy on both sides is now on shakier ground. Leeham News reports that Boeing is currently $10b into costs and losses, which may double while the 737 MAX awaits recertification and is allowed back into service.
