Can You Beat Brackett?

Brian Hanchett, a local educator with Western Washington University, has signed up for a fifth year in a row as George Brackett in the Edmonds Beat Brackett 5k.

The Beat Brackett run used to be the 4th of July Fun Run, before transitioning to its current form five years ago, when Hanchett began. Hanchett impersonates Brackett by donning a big fake beard that definitely sets him apart from the other runners.

Once costumed, he challenges only the serious runners to beat him to the finish line. As an added incentive, all 5k participants get a head start, but only about fifty runners per year will ever beat him. Anybody who does manage to beat him to the finish line gets their very own “I Beat Brackett 2019” wristband.

Simply put, he’s fast, and he’s good. “When I was in high school, I decided to try cross country and I guess it just stuck with me. Running is such a simple sport- all you need are some shoes and you are good to go.”

“I have really enjoyed being George Brackett these past five years. I always loved going to the Fourth of July parade as a kid, and I still look forward that day, especially with the 5K run. It is such a fun experience. There are so many people who participate, from seniors to little kids to entire families (and their pets!). It’s a great way to kick off the Fourth of July celebration,”

Funds from the event go to the cost to put on the Edmonds fireworks show, as part of “An Edmonds Kind of Fourth” the Edmonds Chamber spearheads. This year, it will include the Beat Brackett 5k, Baby Brackett 1k, Children’s Parade, Main Parade, and the much loved fireworks.

If you’re feeling limber and ready to test your mettle, you can sign up at BeatBrackett.com. No fake beard required.
