City of Marysville Urges Caution After a Rash of Pedestrian vs Vehicle Incidents

Most pedestrian fatalities, nearly 80%, happen in the dark. With the days getting shorter and shorter in the PNW, now is the time of year to remind ourselves that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility, per the press release from the City.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that fatality rates for those in vehicles has been dropping steadily for many years, while pedestrians and bicyclists showed a significant uptick. 2018 ranked in as the deadliest year for pedestrians since 1990.

While new technology does make for safer, lower-fatality collisions, that doesn’t necessarily mean less of them overall or less impactful for the pedestrian in a vehicle-vs-pedestrian collision.

Traditionally, the number of pedestrians killed in rural areas far outpaced the numbers found in cities, a narrative that was flipped upside-down in 2016.

Since the beginning of October, the Marysville Fire District has responded to six vehicle versus pedestrian incidents, and one additional fatality on November 17th.

Both drivers and pedestrians can help prevent these tragedies by remaining cognizant of sidewalks and crosswalks, try to make eye contact with drivers as they approach, avoid electronics that draw your eye, and as a driver look for pedestrians everywhere.
