Legion Bluff ADA Trail Access Project Completed

This last Saturday, April 28th, The Legion Bluff trail at Legion Memorial Park was completed. Approximately 60 volunteers along with members of the Port Gardner Rotary and affiliated groups came together to wrap up the second phase of the project.

Through the course of the soggy morning, one hundred twenty-five yards of gravel were spread along the trail. The volunteers

The five-hundred-foot trail winds across the front of Legion’s bluff, allowing mobility-challenged individuals access to the views of Port Gardner Bay and the Navy base there. Everett Parks Department provided the tools for the job, and the occasion was topped off by a barbeque as the rain took a break for the day.

Unknown to even the club members, there was a surprise unveiling of a bench placed mere strides from the edge of the parking lot. While it might strike some as counter-intuitive to add a bench within feet of the parking lot, the back story of the bench sheds light on its strategic placement. An individual citizen who faced their own mobility challenges shared with a member of the Rotary how much they loved the park and the trail, but that with a bench closer to the parking lot would make it much easier for him to get out and about on said trail.

The Port Gardner Rotary took that suggestion to heart, added some funding, and had the pleasure of unveiling the bench. The bench itself has a plaque embedded in its back, commemorating the thirty-year history of community service that the Rotary has contributed.
