Mt Vernon Library Allows to Borrow Discovery Passes

Beginning this spring, Check Out Washington is launching a pilot program that will allow select libraries to let you borrow Discovery Passes. Included in those libraries are Pierce County and Spokane city and county as well. Discovery Passes allow for vehicle access for parks and lands which are managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

The passes will be lent along with a backpack containing binoculars, “other interpretative materials” and a field guide, but you need to bring your own essentials and food. As always, use plenty of caution when you’re planning to hike.

The Check Out Washington passes are multi-vehicle family passes, so you don’t need to worry about printing your license plate number on it. Even better, if you don’t own a car and you’ve been dying to try out a Washington State hike where the passes are required, you can even use a rental. The process is meant to be as inclusive and inviting as possible.

Discovery passes are accepted on any lands which are managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, and to find one of those trails in advance, start here:

Check Out Washington hopes that by giving residents who might not normally spring for the cost of an annual pass, “will help increase awareness and access to state lands.” Check Out Washington is a partnership between the state library system and Washington State Parks.

Go Skagit reports that the program will begin on March 1st.
