New Seat Belt Laws, Effective Jan 2020

Per Safe Kids Northwest, three out of every four car seats are installed improperly, making them ineffective when it comes to protecting their precious cargo. Motor vehicles crashes account for the majority of all child deaths in kids aged four and older.

Beginning January of 2020, new laws will be enforced to hopefully make your young passengers safer. These changes align with the most recent guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

On the first day of the new year and under the new bill, here is what you can expect:

All children under the age of two must ride in a rear facing car seat.

After the age of two and up to four, children must ride in a rear facing car seat or forward facing with a harness.

Children four and older must ride in a car/booster seat until four foot nine inches tall.

Children under the age thirteen must ride in the back seat (as practical to do so, given your vehicle.)

As with the prior iteration of the law, drivers with improperly secured children under the age of sixteen can be ticketed if inadequate or improper protection/equipment is being used, based on age, height or weight.
