Ragin' Ray Hancock, Retired M'ville Firefighter, Has Passed Away

The Marysville Fire District is mourning the passing of retired Firefighter Ray Hancock who died April 1, 2018, after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Hancock, known affectionately as “Ragin’ Ray” to his fire service family, was a diver with the U.S. Navy before joining the Marysville Fire District in 1993. He would later serve as one of the first drivers on Ladder 62 and become a charter member of the Marysville Fire District Technical Rescue Team. In his 19 years with the district, Hancock left his peers with a lifetime of fond memories.

“Ray was an outstanding firefighter, driver/operator and patient care provider,” Fire Chief Martin McFalls said. “His name fit him well; he truly was like a ‘Ray of Sunshine.’ He had a bold presence and booming voice with an outgoing, friendly nature. Ray’s personality and approach to life made him a pleasure, not to mention a lot of fun, to be around.”

Flags will fly at half-staff across the district in honor of Hancock’s life on April 21, the day of his memorial services.
