Stiffer Fines for HOV Lane Violators Begin this Sunday

Effective this Sunday, July 28, people who violate the HOV lane policies will face much steeper fines.

It’s not an uncommon sight to see someone zipping by while you staunchly sit through a routinely slow commute… and see that their vehicle is clearly not a high occupancy one. During an emphasis patrol last Fall, troopers cited 1671 carpool lane violators in just a single week across three counties, including one driver who was stopped three times.

The first infraction will cost $186, unless the driver is the creative sort who also drives with a “doll, dummy of fascimilie” in lieu of a real passenger. The fine for that is another $200.

Multiple or subsequent violations result in increasing fines, up to $336.

In the originally purposed legislation, fines were $755.

A person's driver's license “may not be suspended for a failure to respond, a failure to appear, a violation of a written promise to appear, or a failure to comply with the terms of a notice of traffic infraction for an HOV lane passenger requirement violation,” per the final version of SB-5695.
