King's High School Basketball Player Sophomore Tyler Linhardt is our KRKO Russell & Hill Male Athlete of the Month for March 2020. Tyler scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in King's 70-67 overtime win over Lynden Christian in the 1A State Championship game in Yakima on March 7th. Linhardt was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1A State Basketball tournament. He was a unanimous selection as the Associated Press 1A Washington State Player of the Year and is ranked Washington State's #1 college basketball prospect in the Class of 2022 according to PrepHoops.com. Head basketball coach at King’s High School is Rick Skeen.

Arlington High School Basketball Player Junior Hailey Hiatt is our KRKO Russell & Hill Female Athlete of the Month for March 2020. Hailey led the Eagles basketball team to a 24-3 record and a Third Place Finish in the Class 3A State Tournament last month in the Tacoma Dome. Hailey's tournament averages: 15.7 points per game; 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. She was a 2nd Team All-Tournament selection. Hailey shot 48% from three-point range for the season and tied the Arlington school record earlier this season when she made 9 three-pointers in a game. Arlington Head Coach Joe Marsh said, “What you really want is for your players to play their best basketball in February and March and Hailey really stepped it up and did that for us."

Another week of Social Distancing; but a great line-up on Prep Sports Weekly for Thursday, April 16, 2020. Former Lake Stevens Viking, Georgia Bulldog and Washington Husky quarterback Jacob Eason returns to our show; he's waiting to hear his name called by Roger Goodell at next week's Virtual NFL Draft. Also waiting for his name to be called is the former Marysville Pilchuck Tomahawk and Oregon State Beaver quarterback Jake Luton. It's not just the athletes not able to play this spring, the announcers and scorekeepers and umpires are on the sidelines as well. We talk with Allstate Insurance Agent Brian Reed (he's the PA Announcer and scorekeeper at Monroe High School) and with veteran umpire (and retired meteorologist)Ted Buehner. Finally a visit with two of the captains of the two-time state champion Jackson Timberwolves Softball team Kassidi Dean and Jillian Hampson.

We continue our "social distance" themed shows, on the week where the plug has been pulled on all spring sports in the state of Washington due to the Coronavirus. We hear from Snohomish Girls Tennis Coach (and part-time KRKO basketball broadcaster) Joel Boyer. The mother/son combo of Lynnwood Track & Field Coach Stephanie Tastad and her son, Glacier Peak Basetball player Nathan Tastad. Finally, we catch up with former All-Area Football player from Cascade High School, and current KOMO-TV Sportscaster Femi Abebefe.

We talk Oregon State Women's Basketball with Mikayla Pivec and her sister Malia Pivec who runs track and cross country at Boise State; they join us by phone from Boise. Then we meet the Jackson Timberwolves Boy's Soccer team with head coach Sarah Smart and players Mikey Hatcher, Justin Huttinger and Adan Fernandez. Then a special segment honoring Hall of Fame Basketball Official Steve Colby, with the Executive Director of the Washington Officials Association Todd Stordahl and basketball officials liaison Kevin Erickson.

Prep Sports Weekly, Thursday, March 19, 2020. On a week with no sports, we found a lot of sports to talk about. We meet Marysville Getchell Boys Basketball Coach Corby Schuh and Wesco Player of the Year Malahki Knight. We talk high school sports, or the lack of high school sports with Everett Herald Sportswriter Cameron Van Til. Even though they're not playing games, the Cascade Bruins Baseball team is sticking together (as much as they can with social distancing rules in place), we meet players Joe McBride, Brock Gillis, Jayden Talts and head coach David Benson. And, even though the All State All Star Basketball games will not be played, we talk with the head of the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Nalin Sood on the boys side, and Dan Taylor who is president of the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association; both coaches will talk about honoring the players that were selected to play in the games.

Matthew King of Glacier Peak Swimming is our KRKO Radio Russell & Hill Male Athlete of the Month for February 2020. King set two state meet recorders (both held by Newport's Ugur Taner from 1992) in the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle races at the State Championships in Federal Way. He was named the 4A Swimmer of the Meet after setting a state meet record with a total of 330 points. Matthew also won state titles in both individual events in 2018. Matthew's times in both the 50 and 100 have qualified him for the United States Olympic Trials which will be held in Omaha, Nebraska in June. Matthew is an outstanding student and carries a GPA of better than 3.9 and will be enrolling at the University of Alabama in the Fall where he will continue to swim and hopes to either study Mechanical Engineering or Audio Engineering. Congratulations to our KRKO Radio Russell & Hill Female Athlete of the Month for February 2020. Lake Stevens wrestler Kiley Hubby. Kiley won her second career wrestling state championship when she pinned her opponent in the 2nd round of the 170 lb title match in the Tacoma Dome in February. Hubby is also a two-time national runner-up (2018 and 2019) at the Junior and Cadet National Championships held in Fargo, North Dakota. An outstanding overall athlete; Kiley was named 4A Second Team All-State softball catcher while helping to lead Lake Stevens to a 2nd place finish in the 2019 state tournament. Lake Stevens Girls Wrestling Coach is Al Soler.

We hear from the 5th Place 4A Glacier Peak Grizzlies Boys Basketball Team with head coach Brian Hunter and player Tucker Molina, Brayden Quantrille, Pierce Darlington, Tristen Bates. We also meet the 1A State Champion King's Knights Boys Basketball Team with head coach Rick Skeen and players Shane McGaughey-Fick, Davis Campbell, Jordan Hansen, Will Pohland and Tyler Linhardt. Plus we hear from Edmonds School District Media and Public Relations Supervisor Harmony Weinberg about the Coronavirus.
